Help! I'm a 30 year-old woman, and I am expecting my first baby to be born in a few months. I consider myself uneducated about the different methods of childbirth. Could you please inform me of the pros and cons of natural, medicated, and cesarean births. I want what is best for my baby and myself.

Sincerely,
Which way to go?

2. Dear Parenting,
My baby, Emma, was born 4 weeks before her due date. She has already been in the NICU for one week. I am scared and I feel helpless. Besides the NICU, is there anything else I can do to help stimulate growth? I want to get her home healthy and as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Looking for baby miracle grow

3. Dear Parenting,
No one ever told me how hectic my life would be after Ethan was born! He is my first baby, and needless to say, my husband and I were unprepared for a newborn. What can you tell me about the patterns of newborns? What should I expect to change in my life? What advice can you give me about caring for Ethan?

Sincerely,
What did I get myself into?

Dear Looking for Baby Miracle Grow,
There are many other ways you can help your child grow, here are a few. First, you can try gentle massaging in order to stimulate your child's growth. There is also Kangaroo Care in which you rest your baby on you or your husband's bare chest. you can also play some music for your baby in order to create sensory stimulation which will also help your baby to grow. We hope this helps! Sincerely, Miracle Growers ( Hannah and Brooke)

Dear What Did I Get Myself Into,
Newborns are never easy to take care of. Truth is, newborns can sometimes damage relationships. But honestly, it takes a lot of patience to be a good parent. It never happens right away. Life isn't a fairytale. Newborns cry, whine, wake up every few hours, and poop their diapers. But in a few weeks, you will be in the new hectic routine. The daily tasks won't seem as hectic after you get used to it. If your baby is colicky and won't stop the crying, try the Five S's. Swaddling, Sushing, Swinging, Stomach Comfort, and Sucking (pacifiers). Newborns can't speak for themselves so you have to be patient.
Best of luck to you.

Dear Which Way to Go?
Congratulations on your upcoming baby! There are three different types of childbirth as you noted: natural, cesarean, and medicated. There is no "correct" way and it is up to the mother to decide in the end what will be best for her and the baby. A natural childbirth consists of no drug or medicine therapy. Dr. Grantly Dick Reed believes that the pain is caused by fear, so if the mother is more aware, there will be less pain. Outcomes of having a natural childbirth is a positive attitude, less pain, fewer birth complications, and a faster labor. A medicated childbirth, is the complete opposite. Anesthesia or an epidural can be used. There is no pain, but there is a 23% risk. The concern is that there might be a risk for the medication to have an effect on the baby and delivery. In a cesarean section, an incision is made in the abdomen and uterus. Reasons for a c-section may be that the baby is too big, lacking oxygen, or breeched.

Dear Which Way to Go,
Natural birth is probably the best bet for delivery. Natural birth has fewer birth complications, faster labor and a positive attitude. Medicated childbirth can take longer and there is a concern about the effects the medication has on the baby. Cesarean sections usually occur for high risk pregnancies such as breeched babies or large babies. C-sections have a longer recovery time and involve a surgical removal of the baby through the abdomen.
Good luck with your baby!

Dear Which way to go,

First off it is great that you want to become educated in the methods of childbirth before delivery. Each method is significantly different and it varies from mother to mother. There isn’t one that is head and shoulders above the other but there are pros and cons for each.
Natural birth is labor without medication. It is said by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read the only pain you experience is caused by fear. It can be prepared by Lamaze class as well as relaxation and breathing techniques. Generally, the outcomes are very positive, less pain, fewer birth complications and faster deliveries.
Another option is a medicated delivery. It is the most popular form of delivery. (80-95%) Although you won’t feel any pain, concerns of a medicated delivery is the effect on the baby. Types of drugs vary from regional anesthesia and walking epidural. If there happen to be complications, technology can come into play by using backing extraction or forceps.
Last but not least is you have the option of getting a cescearean section, which is an incision in your abdomen and uterus. About 21 -30 % of women have a C-section. Mothers don’t usually go through with a C-Section unless the baby is too large for the pelvis, placenta abruption, placenta previa, multiple births, previous c-sections, active genital herpes, if the mother has a serious illness (heart disease, diabetes) or position of the baby. Since it’s a surgical procedure, it will take a few weeks to recover. Hopefully you are fully aware with the three methods of delivery and can pick one that suits you best.

Dear Which Way To Go,
There are many pros and cons to each method of childbirth. Natural childbirth has less pain if the mother is educated about the birth and she is not afraid during the process. Also, it has fewer birth complications. With natural child birth the mother can interact with the baby faster. For medicated childbirth, there is no pain felt with regional anesthesia. With this anesthesia, there is a 23% chance of a complication during delivery. 80-95% of women have medicated births. The only concern is the effect on delivery and baby. The cesarean section has risks because it is an invasive procedure. 21-25% of women have C-sections. If the baby is in a breech position, having difficulty breathing, or if the mother has heart disease this procedure is highly recommended. We hope this information helps you with your decision! sincerely, baby help

Dear Which Way to Go?
Which ever way you decide to have your baby, there are benefits and risks. Natural childbirth is a no drug or medication therapy. Dr. Grantly Dick Reed said that the more you know about natural childbirth, the less pain you'll feel in delivery, so it's up to you to do your research on that one! Next form of childbirth is medicated childbirth. This entails the use of an epidural that'll numb you from the waist down during delivery. Although you will not feel any pain, it's often hard to bare down with the contractions as they come. Cesarean delivery is what I'd like to call "The Last Resort." You should never want to choose this type of birth unless there are complications with your delivery. It leaves a nasty scar, and you just wouldn't want that kind of birth unless you're incredibly thin and your pelvis is too small to have a baby pass through it. Now that you know a little more about these three birthing processes, you should decide what you think is right for you and your baby.

Sincerely,
Haley, Maura, and Molly

Dear What did I get myself into,

Congratulations on your new little bundle of joy! While it maybe stressful at first things do get better. First off, newborns tend to sleep about 16 hours a day about 2-3 hours at a time. You should take this time to sleep instead of catching up on things around the house, that way you will have energy when the baby is awake. Another important thing is that you should try to stay calm because the temperament is affected by yours.
Your life will change drastically once you have a baby. You won’t have as much free time that you once did, but don’t feel bad about taking time for yourself and asking your husband to help with household tasks. Your marriage might change some but once again, don’t feel bad about asking your husband for help or support. When taking care of your son, Ethan, try to be calm as much as possible. When he gets fussy, bouncing and shifting to a position that he is comfortable in will usually work. Laying him on his side while Ethan is in discomfort will also help. Hope this advice was helpful! Congratulations and best of wishes!

Dear Which way to go?,
The option of delivery is determined by your medical history, state of the fetus, and your own person choice. You can choose to have cesarean delivery, medicated, or natural childbirth. Natural childbirth consist of no medication and if it is your first baby it is less painful but tends to have better outcomes. When preparing for this, it is good to go to classes and have your spouse coach you in relaxation and breathing. Typically the mother has a positive attitude, fewer birth complications, faster labor, and respond to babies faster. Also, the mother as a faster recovery period. During a medicated delivery (which is 95%-80% of mothers) there is no pain felt. There are options in medications such as two types of regional anesthesia; classic epidural, and walking epidural. These medications have to be taken prior to delivery and will last for hours. It numbs from the waist down. Cesarean section surgically removing the baby from the mother's abdomen and uterus. This is done usually when the baby is at risk, like if the baby is in breech position or too large for the mother's pelvis. After a c-section is preformed the mother most likely will not have another natural birth.

1. Dear Which Way To Go,
Having a baby can be a wonderful experience but there are pros and cons to which ever birthing procedure you choose. Every person goes through a different experience it all depends on what option you feel the most comfortable with. Natural birth tends to last for up to 12 hours when delivering your first born. There can be extreme contractions that you'll have to bear with. If you use the medicated method of labor, then the pain will be relieved. Though, with medicated delivery, you could potentially harm the baby and in some cases, you won't be able to feel from the waist down so it'll be harder to bear down with your contractions. Cesarean delivery is generally only used when there are complications with delivery. The pain lasts longer after delivery, and recovery is hard when you have to take care of your baby. There is also the possibility of having a scar. Which ever process you choose, there will be draw backs, it all depends on what you feel is best for you and the baby. Hope you find the right option.
Best of luck,
Dr. Uh-Oh Oreo, OBYN

2. Dear Looking for miracle baby growth,

I sympathize with your premature child and it's predicament. Some ways to help her grow is to massage her gently, Kangaroo care; which is any type of bare skin contact, and soothing music like Mozart. Using all of these things or a combination of things will help the growth of your child.

Sincerly,
Dr. Uh-Oh Oreo, OBGYN

Dear Looking for baby miracle grow,
There are a few options to stimulate growth. One is to play soft music, preferably classical, which produces sensory stimulation in babies. This can stimulate weight gain. Another option is to gently massage your baby for 15 minutes, three times a day. This has shown to provide a 47% greater weight gain than non-stimulated babies. Babies who received these massages were in general more alert, and they were able to go home 6 days earlier than others. A final option is Kangaroo Care, in which you place your baby on either yours or your partner's bare chest. This stimulates weight gain

Dear Looking for Baby Miracle Grow,

I know having your baby in the NICU must be a scary and uncomfortable feeling and that is why we are here to help you get that baby out of there as soon as possible! One method to make the baby grow faster is massaging the baby! I know it seems silly, but we are serious. Three times a day and about fifteen minutes are just enough to get that baby bigger. Also if you combine massages with lullabies or music fosters growth, weight gain, motor activity, alertness, and behavior organization! And the combination of massages and lullabies is proven to shorten the hospital stay. I hope this helped you, and I hope your baby gets home to you soon. Good luck!

Dear What Did I Get Myself Into,
with a newborn, you can expect a lot of changes in your life. everything will now revolve around the baby and its daily patterns. A newborn baby will sleep about 16 hours a day. that may sound great, but the baby will be constantly sleeping for about 2-3 hours, and then waking up and then falling back asleep. The only thing newborns do during the day is sleep and eat with short periods of wakefulness in between. You may notice that your marriage becomes a last priority. Most parents have trouble with their marriage at first, but as long as you and your husband work as a team to take care of the baby, you shouldn't have a problem. Having newborns can be one of the best times of your life, so enjoy it and take it one day at a time. good luck! sincerely, the neonate nurses

Dear Which Way to Go,
Natural Childbirth is the method of childbirth that prevents pain by eliminating the momther’s fear through education of relaxation and breathing during delivery. This was invented by Dr. Grantley Dick-Read. The pros of natural birth are that you feel great after giving birth and are almost immediately ready to walk around and take care of your baby. Natural childbirth is faster, gives mother a positive attitude, less painful, and fewer birth complications. Medicated delivery is when the mother receives an epidural, which numbs the waist down. This decreases mobility, weakens uterine contractions, increases risk of a c-section, and can slow labor process. Also, there is a concern that it could have an effect on the delivery and the baby.
Good Luck,
Baby Mamas

Allie Citro, Meghan Gilleylen, Lindsey Hertz said...

Dear Which Way to Go,
Don’t worry! Help is on the way! Natural childbirth is probably the safest way to go. There are fewer birth complications and a faster labor. There is more pain then medicated delivery, but there is less pain if you keep a positive attitude. It’s easier to get up and walk around after your delivery if it was natural. Medicated delivery is also another way to go. 80-95 percent of women choose this process. There is no pain during the delivery, but there can be negative effects on the baby if the drugs pass through the placenta or breast milk. A woman typically can’t walk around right after the birth, and medication can also decrease your ability to push. The last form of delivery is a Cesarian section. It is an incision in the abdomen and uterus to remove the baby. This is typically done is there is a complication in the birth, for example, babies too large, breech position, difficulty breathing, or the umbilical cord comes out first. This procedure can be dangerous because it is an actual surgery, and you remain in the hospital for at least three days. Talk to your doctor about which procedure is best for you and your baby. Good luck!

Dear Looking For Baby Miracle Grow,

You should try giving your baby massages. They should be for fifteen minutes, and three times a day. This will increase the baby’s weight gain by 47%. The babies become more responsive, alert, and active. Also, this has been shown to help the newborn leave the hospital almost a week earlier. Another great thing is Kangaroo Care. You can place your newborn against your or your husband’s bare chest. This not only increases the weight gain, and gives it a higher oxygen intake level but it increases the bond between you and your neonate. If you want one more idea, there have been music studies shown to increase weight gain. Best of luck to you and your little neonate!

Sincerely,
Hannah MOMTANA

Dear What Did I Get Myself Into,

Do not fear! Many people go through this same exact experience! Most newborns sleep for sixteen hours, but only sleep for three hours at the most at one time. They have around six to eight sleep periods. This is the usual pattern: they wake, they eat, and they sleep. It is an ongoing cycle. Usually different tones mean different things. If your baby cries more than three hours a day, your baby is probably a colic baby. Do not ignore your marriage. Things will be rough and DEFINITELY different but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad things. Divide the household tasks up, and embrace the differences. Good luck, remember – you will be fine!

Sincerely,
Hannah MOMTANA

Dear Looking for Baby Miracle Grow,
Congrats on Emma, but my condolences about her circumstances, there are quite a few different ways to stimulate growth. Kangaroo Care is one option, which is were you place Emma on your bare chest. This will increase weight gain, oxygen levels, and creates a stronger bond between Emma and yourself. Another method is to give Emma a gentle massage. Massage her three times a day for about 15 minutes. This will help her gain weight, and increases her activity and responsiveness. Play some gentle music or sing some lullabies during the massages to help stimulate her senses. While she is in the NICU, if possible, keep the noise and light sources to a minimum. Studies have shown that over stimulation of these senses can lead to hampered psychological and physical growth.
It is also good to have a calm, stress free environment for Emma. With today’s technology, Emma has a good chance to live a full healthy life.

Dear Looking for baby miracle grow,
There are three ways to stimulate the growth of your baby. One way is through musical stimulation by playing music or singing to the baby. Another way is massage therapy. This is giving the baby a massage 3 times a day for 15 minutes. The last option to simulate the growth of your baby is Kangaroo Care. This is when you place the baby on bare skin, which can help with weight gain.

Dear What did I get myself into?,
Generally the daily cycle of a newborn baby is wakefulness, sleeping, and activity. On average a baby sleeps for 16 hours a day, and eats every 2-3 hours. Your marriage and social life will change after the baby comes. Your marriage will become more stressful and you and your partner will have to share responsibilities. You wont have much time for social life due to the need of mother infant bond and it is recommended that you do not have visitors other than family.

Studies have shown that touch stimulates this growth, and so mothers may turn to gentle massage to achieve this. Also, Kangaroo care is another technique involving touch, in which the baby rests against the mother’s chest. Dear Which Way to Go?,
It’s great that you’re searching for which method of childbirth would be right for you. Natural childbirth has fewer birth complications, faster labor, and results in a more positive attitude towards labor. The idea of natural childbirth was created by Dr. Dick-Reed and trains women in physical fitness, breathing, and relaxation during delivery. In medicated childbirth less pain is felt due to weakened contractions and there is no known risk to the baby. On the other hand, there is decreased mobility, the mother’s blood pressure drops, there is a greater risk of cesarean or assisted delivery, and it is harder for the woman to work with contractions. Cesarean delivery is usually used in high risk or emergency deliveries. About 4% of c-sections result in bleeding, infections, and other serious complications. The risk for the infant dying during delivery is about 11% higher for vaginal births if the woman has had a prior cesarean delivery. Hope we’ve helped you create a more educated idea of each of the methods of delivery. Good luck!

Dear Which way to go,

There are many pros and cons to the three types of births you mentioned. First you must know what each type of birth is. Unmedicated delivery is otherwise known as natural and prepared birth. Natural or prepared childbirth are methods in which the mother seeks to prevent pain by eliminating her fear through education of physiology of reproduction and training in breathing and relaxation during delivery. She may also learn techniques that will assist in giving birth. You can take Lamaze classes, where you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of childbirth. The mother will have a coach, such as a husband or friend, who will train them in breathing and relaxation techniques. The pros of this type of birth could be that the mother will feel more in sync with the delivery so she will know when to push with the contractions. A mother will also be able to walk around after delivery instead of having to stay in bed. The cons of this type of birth is that the mother will feel the pain of the birth as opposed to having a medicated delivery where the mother may not feel as much pain. Medicated delivery is where the mother will receive a local anesthesia or pain killers. Some people believe that the medications used during this delivery may pass through the placenta and enter into the fetal blood supply. Another con would be that the mother can not walk around after the birth until the epidural wears off. Depending on whether you can handle pain well, this may or may not be a good choice for delivery. The medicated delivery may alleviate some pain due to childbirth but you also have to have an epidural. Cesarean birth is a surgical procedure. This is normally only used in emergency situations. It is also more likely used if it is your first baby, a large baby, or you are a mother over 40. The cons would be that your recovery time will be for a longer time. You will not be able to lift heavy things because of your stitches. I hope that this information helps you to make an informed decision.

Mothers Know Best

Dear which way to go,
There is really no need to worry for there is plenty of information out there on the pros and cons of each method of childbirth. However I will provide you with some of the basics. Natural childbirth is a method that some women choose because its shows to have fewer birth complications, faster labor, there are no drugs involved, and the mothers can respond to the baby quicker after the birth. A woman can participate in the prepared childbirth method formed by Dr. Fernand Lamaze to prepare for natural childbirth. This is a method that uses instruction, breathing exercises, and social support to induce controlled physical responses to uterine contractions and reduce fear and pain. Then there is medicated delivery, which is a bit controversial. About 80-95% of women choose medicated delivery. Some women choose to get a classic epidural, which lasts 2 hours and takes 20 minutes to set in. Some cons of this is that there is decreased mobility, it weakens contractions, it may slow labor, and it increases the risk for a c-section (which I will discuss later). The woman is numb from the waist down. There is also the option of a walking epidural, which lasts 2-6 hours and takes 5 minutes to set in. This is less risky than the classic, and the woman can feel her legs. This gives her more mobility and allows her to help with pushing. Finally I will inform you of the last method, a cesarean section. This is the delivery of a baby by surgical removal from the uterus. About 30% of women have a cesarean section a year. There are many different reasons why a woman may have a cesarean section. It may be voluntary or, more commonly, it may be done due to birth complications. Some complications include the baby being in breech position, the infant is having difficulty breathing, or the umbilical cord is coming out first. I hope this gives you a better idea of the different methods of childbirth. Remember that the decision is ultimately yours!

Dear Parenting,
I understand your fear, however there are some easy ways to help with the situations. You can do something called Kangaroo Care, in which the baby is placed against mom or dad’s chest. This has been proven to stimulate weight gain, and it also makes it easier to bond with your child. You also could play music. Studies have proven that this also can stimulate weight gain. Finally there is gentle massage. Studies showed that gentle massage for15 minutes 3 times a day proved 47% greater weight gain. I would highly suggest these three methods. Try to relax and enjoy your time with your newborn, because the biggest task is getting a healthy baby home! Good luck with baby Emma.

Dear looking for baby miracle growth,
There are many different ways to stimulate the growth of your child. One type of stimulations is kangaroo care. Kangaroo care is when the newborn baby is placed against the mothers or fathers. This skin to skin contact is resembles the womb, the baby can hear the beating heart, the breathing, and warm of your body. This enable the baby to gain weight faster and the babies oxygen levels are higher. Another way to stimulate the babies growth is full body massages for 15 minutes and 3 times a day.

Dear Which way do I Go,
There are 3 different ways to deliver a baby, natural childbirth, medicated delivery, and a Cesarean section. The pros for natural child birth is that the delivery process has more of a positive attitude, fewer birth complications, the labor process id not as long as a medicated delivery, also the mother can get up and walk around right after the delivery. There are not many cons to natural delivery but there is more pain that comes with it. The second type of delivery is a medicated one. Many women choose to have a medicated delivery about 80-95% of women choose this method of childbirth for them. The pros to a medicated delivery is there is less pain, but on the other hand the labor process is longer, your usually numb from the waist down and this doesn’t allow the mother to push with the contractions. The last type of delivery is a Cesarean Section. This is when the doctors to make an incision in the abdomen and uterus, and 21-25% of women get this. The pros to a c-section is when there are birth complications it allows the mother to give birth.

Dear Which Way to Go,
As you already know, there are several different options for giving birth including natural childbirth, medicated delivery and cesarean section to choose from. Most pregnant women don’t really take the time to research the different options and make an educated decision, so it’s good that you’re taking the time to find out some information about each and make the best decision. Unfortunately there really isn’t a clear “right” and “wrong” choice because every pregnancy is different and women’s bodies handle things differently. Some women believe natural childbirth is the safest way to go, especially for the baby. Medicines may scare them even though studies have shown it doesn’t have major affects on the baby. A few pros of natural childbirth are that the woman is usually very well prepared and has a more positive attitude, fewer birth complications, faster labor, and a much quicker recovery. One of the cons could be more pain because there is nothing to numb the feeling. On the other hand, medicated delivery will have much less pain because of either a classic epidural or a walking epidural to numb the intense pain. The difference between the two types is that classic takes twenty minutes to begin working, lasts for two hours, and numbs you from the waist down, while a walking epidural takes five minutes to begin working and lasts two-six hours. The bad thing is that epidurals can decrease mobility, weaken uterine contractions, decrease ability to push, may slow labor, may end up needing assisted delivery, have an increased risk for c-section, and mom’s blood pressure can drop. Your last option is cesarean section, which is a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus. It’s not a bad decision but it’s usually used more if the baby is too large, in breech position, or any other problems with the baby where it needs to be removed very quickly. Some women choose this option so they don’t have to go through so much pain or if they’ve had previous c-sections or are having a multiple birth. In the end it's really up to you which will work the best but I hope this information will help you make the best decision!
Sincerely,

Dear Which way to go,
Congrats on your pregnancy! Each delivery method has both positive and negative side effects. Natural birth can be a joy, but also may come with great pain. You may walk almost immediately after birth and, without complications, leave the hospital earlier that the other methods, fewer complications, and the time to deliver the baby is less. Medicated delivery can lessen the pain, but comes at a cost. The effects the medication have on the baby are unknown, may lead to more complications, slower birth process, and cannot walk around after birth. C-section should only be used when needed. It increases complication, long stay in hospital, and may never have a normal child birth in the future. There is no pain during the c-section though.

Sincerely,
Kangaroo Crew

Dear Dr. Uh-Oh Oreo, OBGYN,
Thank you for the information, but I believe I need more information to help me better understand what to do to help my baby. I am unsure of what bare skin contact would be best to help my child. I mean elbow to ear, or maybe chin, you know, like a cat? I play Mozart all the time, but can I play Beethoven? I don't want to do anything that will harm my baby. What type of massages? Head massages? I thought they had fontanels. Will I harm him if I am not gentle? As for Kangaroo Care, does that require any special equipment? I am on a strict budget, and I can't afford to have any exotic animals imported. Well I guess all I am saying is that I need more information to be able to "miracle grow" my baby. He really needs help. I am desperate. Thanks for sympathizing, but that doesn't make little Edward Cullen grow any faster.
Sincerely,
Dancin with Babies

I was absent so I wrote this and hopefully did it right!

Dear which way to go,
Choosing which method of childbirth can be a stressful decision! Luckily I will give you information that should help expedite your decision making process:). Natural childbirth seeks to prevent pain by eliminating fear through education about the physiology of reproduction and training in breathing and relaxation during delivery. If you are a strong but laid back person and will take the time to become educated, this may be for you! Medicated childbirth involves the administration of drugs by professional doctors to lessen the pain during labor. About 80% to 95% of women have medicated childbirths. There is no proof that the drugs actually harm the baby. The types of drugs vary from regional anesthesia to a walking epidural. This may be for you if you are excited to have a baby but definitely not ready to take on all the pain of having a baby. A Cesarean delivery is delivery of a baby by surgical removal from the uterus. There are certain scenarios where this must take place. For example, if the labor process is going by too slow, you are bleeding vaginally, the baby is breech ( feet first), or if the baby is transverse (lying across in the uterus. Since this is your first baby, if all is healthy, the doctor will probably suggest going with either a natural or medicated birth. No matter what method you choose, I wish you all the best! Happy pregnancy:)
