Seniors-Heredity and the Environment

Seniors, welcome to Livin’ In the Future. We are going to take a closer look at characteristics influenced by heredity and the environment, specifically intelligence, personality, schizophrenia, and autism. For this class assignment you should refer to text pages 68-70. If you cannot find some of the information in the text, then use the internet to search. I encourage you to work with a partner.

You will be responsible for the following information on your chapter 3 test, which will be some time next week.

How to Respond:

To answer the following questions, first scroll down to your class color. Click on the comments link in the bottom right corner. Type your answers in the text box. Be sure to re-type the heading (ex: Intelligence) and number your answers. For your identity, choose the name/URL option. Put your first names and last initials into the name slot. Leave the URL slot blank. Be sure to click on PUBLISH when finished.

Reminders:
-Ch. 3 reading quiz #2- Thursday – pgs. 57-64
-Article reports due Friday. The requirements are on this blog, too. Just scroll
down.

Personality
1. Temperment appears to be largely inborn and is often consistent over the years, though it may respond to social experiences or parental handling.

Schizophrenia
1. It is a mental disorder marked by loss of contact with reality; symptoms include hallucinations and delusions.
2. Risk of it is 10 times as great among siblings & offspring of schizophrenics as among the general population. The risk is from shared genes, not environment.
3. Disorder may originate in lack of chemical called Reelin. A defective gene of reelin may result in misplacement of nerve cells, and this may create a disposition to schizophrenia.
4. Estimated genetic contribution between 63-85%.

Autism
1. Pervasive developmental disorder of the brain characterized by lack of normal social interaction, impaired communication & imagination, and repetitive obsessive behaviors.
2. Affects estimated 6 of every 10000 people.
3. Boys
4. Children may speak in sing-song voice, paying little attention to listener. Severe cases often show repetitive behaviors such as spinning, rocking, hand flapping, and head banging. Obsessed with certain subjects, rituals, or routines.
5. Has no single cause, runs in families, seems to have strong genetic basis, From gene HOXA1, involved in development in brain stem, most primitive part of brain.

Personality
1.Heredity of your personality is about 40% when joining the five major traits together but about 66% when setting aside variances attributed to measurement error. This brings environmental influence to about 34%.

Schizophrenia
1.A disorder characterized by a loss of contact with reality and by such symptoms as hallucinations and delusions.
2.It is 10 times greater among siblings and offspring of schizophrenia.Increased risk from shared genes, not shared environments.
3.The development or heredity of glutamate. People born in urban areas are more likely to get disease.
4.63-85% genetic contribution.

Autism
1.A severe disorder of the brain characterized by lack of normal social interaction impaired communication and imagination and a highly restricted range of activities and interests.
2.6 out of 1000 could have this disorder.
3.4-5 Autistic children are boys.
4.Fail to notice emotional signs of others, they speak in a sing song voice and pay little attention to cuddle or make eye contact.
