Sophs First Assignment-The Significance of 1492

You all know the old saying from grade school, "In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Now let's go beyond this famous line to the real importance of Christopher Columbus' discovery of America. Your task is to click on this link and carefully read The Significance of 1492. When you are finished reading, answer the following questions.

1. Why was the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery treated differently than the 400th anniversary?

1. the 400th anniversary thought of columbus' discovery as a great discovery and they didn't look on the bad side. the 500th annivery found this as a time to morn for all of the indian that died because of all of the diseases that the europeans brought over

2.trade was the big result and the exchange of food was another

1. The 500th anniversary was different from the 400th because the 400th just looked at what good he did in the 500th people saw all the bad things he did like bring diseases.
2. The meeting of the two world brought different food to places that couldn’t get this food so this started trading for goods.
3. The European diseases wiped out 50% maybe more of the native Americans that lived there.
4. His discovery started trade and gave immigrants a place to go to try to make the perfect future.

1.The 500th anniversy was treated differntly because many ppl treated him with impearlism,colonialism and conquest.
2.it resulted with not only extraordinary transformation of the natural environment&human cultures in the New World, it also initiated far reaching changes in the Old World.
3.the disease caused the greartest mass deaths it killed 50 to 90% of the pop.
4.his discovery contributed by the indians living free but offered a car for criticizing the corruptions,abuses,&restrictions of european society
