1. The 400th anniversary of Columbus made him look like a man of mythic stature, an explorer, and discoverer. The 500th anniversary identifyed him with imperialism, colonialism, and conquest.

2. There were new foods introduced to beth hemispheres, the global patterns of trade were overturned, and the natural enviroment was transformed.

3. The diseases reduced the resistance that the Native Americans had to offer to European intruders.

4. To the Europeans the New World seemed to be the place of innocence, freedom, and eternal youth.

1. Because the 500th anniversary had many indigenous and African descent identify him with imperialism, colonialism,and conquest. The National Council of Churches adopted a resolution calling October 12th a day of mourning for millions of indigenous people who died as a result of European colonization. 400th anniversary was commemorated with a massive Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The Exhibition celebrated him as a man of mythic stature, an explorer and discoverer who carried Christian civilization across the Atlantic Ocean and initiated the modern age.

2. New foods were revealed between both worlds. Tomatoes, chocolate, corn, and turkey changed the European diet. The Europeans then introduced sugar, cattle, pigs, and ginger to the Americans. Global patterns of trade were overturned as crops grew in the new world. Such as tobacco, rice, and sugar. It fed growing consumer markets in Europe. The natural enviroment was also transformed.

3. The Indian people had no natural immunities which caused the greatest mass deaths in human history. Diseases such as measles and smallpox had reduced the populations by 50 to 90 percent. From Peru to Canada, disease lowered the resistance that Native Americans were able to offer to European intruders.

4. To many Europeans, the New World seemed to be a place of innocence, freedom, and eternal youth. Columbus himself believed that he landed near the Biblical Garden of Eden. The perception of the New World as an enviroment free from the corruptions and injustices of European life would provide a vantage point for criticizing all social evils. So while the collision of three worlds resulted in death and enslavement in unprecedented numbers, it also encouraged visions of a more perfect future.

1.The 500th anniversary of Columbus was treated differently than the 400th anniversary becasue the people in 1893 celebrated a huge "Columbian Exhibition" in Chicago. They believed Columbus was a mythical person. They said he was an explorer and discover who lead the Christian civilization across the Atlantic ocean and started the modern age. While during the 500th anniversary the people descibed Columbus with imperialism, colonialism, and conquest.

1. On the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus, he was looked upon as a hero, or someone who was mythical. He believed to have carried Christian civilization to Americans.
Now, on the 500th Anniversary, they used terms such as imperialism, colonialism, and conquest to describe him. Meaning, he took over land, and conquered people. They blamed him for the millions that were dead due to European diseases.
The difference between the two Anniversaries is their opinion on his Legacy. Was he someone who was a great discoverer and brought great culture to the world or did he just bring upon diseases, slavery, and racism?


2. The results were global exchange of goods and ideas. Such as, new foods for both of the hemispheres. Global trade, including crops, tobacco, and rice. A natural environment, in which the Europeans helped doing by clearing forests. The introduction of horses for hunting and herding. Also, some negatives, such as death and diseases, which led to slavery.

3. Due to the decreased Native American population, which was by 50-90%, Africans were put into slave trade.

4. They looked to a new world of innocence, freedom, and youth. They had visions for a perfect future.

The 500th aniversary of Columbus was treated differently than the 400th anniversary because the 400th anniversary made it sound like Columbus was wonderful for bringing modern age, but the 500th anniversary they blame him for the millions who died from the diseases that were brought over and make Columbus sound like the bad guy.

2. The meetings of the two worlds brought new expierneces and discovery. Like new foods, trade , but not all things were good.

The 500th anniversary was treated differently, because people's perspective of Columbous changed from good to bad. With comments along the lines of "creating an American Holocaust", and being held responsible for the death of millions.

Some results, are trade, learing of new cultures, and disease spread.

The European diseases caused the death of millions of Native Americans, because they had no immunities and no medicinces to help get rid of them.
